Hot Weather Udate

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to update you on how we are managing the heat and to share our plans for Wednesday 24th June.

First of all, I want to say a huge thank you to all of our families for supporting us in our efforts to manage such an unprecedented situation by encouraging normal school attendance. Navigating this weather is a team effort, and your partnership makes a massive difference.

Reflecting on yesterday

We were fortunate to have had a lovely sea breeze blowing across the site, which helped keep the classrooms more comfortable. We monitored the temperature in our hottest rooms throughout the day; while it was undeniably warm, our students and staff managed brilliantly.

To support them, we kept our practical mitigations running smoothly:

  • Refrigerated water was available at break and lunchtimes.

  • The sports hall was well-utilized as a dedicated cool zone.

  • We erected extra gazebos in the courtyard to provide more outdoor shade.

  • Learning was adapted so that it was not too strenuous, and several classes were successfully relocated to cooler rooms.

Plans for Wednesday 24th June

We are closely watching the forecast, which indicates a further rise in temperature. Our thinking for Wednesday is entirely based on our best assessment of the safety of our young people. With all of our current mitigations firmly in place, it is our intention for the school to remain open as normal for all students.

We believe that our managed environment is the safest place for them to be during the heat of the day, and we hope this continuity also supports our working parents.

Here is what today will look like:

  • All current measures continue: The uniform flexibility (Crofton PE kit or adapted uniform), indoor PE lessons, shade zones, and extra hydration stations remain in place.

  • Room changes: We will be actively offering teachers the opportunity to move more of their classes out of the hottest rooms as the day progresses.

  • Air circulation: Our site team will be looking at where we can borrow fans from classrooms when they are not in use to help increase air circulation.

An Urgent Note on Sun and Water Safety

From conversations with students, it is incredibly clear that the beach is a huge attraction for them. While we completely understand the temptation, our proximity to the sea is a factor in our judgment that students are safest in school during the day.

Please could I ask you to have an urgent conversation with your child about the dual dangers of the midday sun and unsupervised swimming. If they do visit the beach after school hours, it is vital they stay aware of the strength of the sun and UV levels, as well as tidal currents and the hidden hazards of open water.

We will review the situation again tomorrow and will be in touch regarding our plans for Thursday.

Thank you again for your incredible support as we work through this warm week together.

With kind regards,

Mr Mark Palmer
