Heatwave Update

Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you all managed to stay reasonably cool over the weekend.
As we navigated the first major day of this heatwave today, I wanted to update you on how things went and outline our plans to keep everyone safe and comfortable for tomorrow.
Our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students. To support them today, we set up extra water stations at break and lunch.
Plans for tomorrow: Tuesday 23rd June
School remains open for all year groups. While temperatures tomorrow look set to be broadly similar to today—with the potential peak coming later in the week—we are putting the following common-sense measures in place:
Uniform Flexibility: Students may choose to come to school in their Crofton PE kit or stick with the adapted normal uniform (no blazer, jumper, or tie required). We want them to wear whichever option they feel most comfortable in.
PE Lessons Indoors: For the remainder of the week, all PE lessons will be moved indoors out of the direct sun.
Hydration Support: Please ensure your child comes to school with a full, refillable water bottle. Our extra staff on duty at break and lunch will help students refill bottles quickly and efficiently. This means they won't need to leave lessons, saving them from walking around the site in the heat of the day.
Room Changes: We are actively monitoring our building and will be re-rooming lessons out of our hottest classrooms wherever possible. Students should be prepared for some room changes tomorrow.
Shade and Cool Zones: Alongside keeping the sports hall open at break and lunch, we will also be allowing students into the copse area, which offers excellent natural shade.
Sun Protection: Please ensure that your child applies sun cream before they come to school in the morning.
Given our close proximity to the coast, we know how tempting the sea is during a heatwave. Please can I ask you to reinforce the message of water safety at home? It is vital that students stay safe, swim only in designated areas, and remain aware of the hidden dangers of open water, even when trying to cool down.
I completely appreciate that different schools are taking a variety of approaches this week, and that many of us hold strong views on the best way forward. Please rest assured that we are making practical, common-sense decisions based on the real-time conditions in our school, always with the safety of our community as our number one priority.
We will review the situation again tomorrow and will communicate plans for the rest of the week in due course.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support, partnership, and patience as we work through this warm week together.
With kind regards,
Mr Mark Palmer
Headteacher
