Year 6 Transition

At Crofton, we recognise that the move to secondary school is a major and memorable event in a young person’s life. At Crofton, we aim to make the transition journey an enjoyable and informative experience.  We know that it can be an anxious time and it is important to us that we prepare each young person fully so that they settle in quickly when they join us in September.

Once a Year 6 student has gained a place at Crofton School for the following September, the process of preparing for Induction will begin.

In May, Mr Marshall, Head of Year (Transition) visits the four main feeder schools:

  • Crofton Anne Dale
  • Crofton Hammond
  • Ranvilles
  • Peel Common

Additionally, a representative from Crofton School will visit the remaining junior schools that have students transferring to us.

At these first meetings, Mr Marshall will meet with the Year 6 teachers in the junior schools. During this time each individual student will be discussed regarding their academic levels and their social and behavioural development. If it is apparent that individual students are very anxious about the transition or have special requirements, an additional meeting with them or an additional visit to Crofton School will be arranged.

In the second visit, Mr Marshall and a group of Year 9 Transition Prefects will talk to Year 6 students about the differences between junior school and secondary school. This is an excellent opportunity for Year 6 students to learn about the Crofton School day. We encourage the Year 6 students to ask questions and express their concerns.

In June, all Year 6 Parents will be invited to an Information Evening at Crofton School to explain the induction process in more detail.

By the end of the first half of the Summer Term all information gathered about the pupils transferring will be used to determine the Tutor Group for each pupil. Each group will be of mixed ability with a balance of boys and girls.

In June, all prospective Crofton School students will be invited to come for an Induction Day at the school where they will meet their Tutor Group and experience a selection of Year 7-style lessons. This valuable experience helps the students to understand the expectations of secondary school. The purpose of this day is to provide a fun and informative experience so that pupils and parents feel fully prepared for the big step in September and can therefore relax and enjoy the summer holidays.

All Tutor Groups will have Year 9 Transition Prefects supporting them during the Induction Day. These Transition Prefects will also be attached to the same Tutor Group throughout the whole of Year 7 to act as peer mentors.

Throughout the first term, tutors and the Head of Year support transition through tutor activities and assemblies. Gradually pupils form new friendships and become fully integrated into the life of the school.
