A Parent and Student Guide to the Learning Support Department

What happens when joining Crofton School?

computer picAll students will be assessed for early profiling purposes. Assessment will provide up to date reading and spelling scores which will contribute to any support package necessary for students with additional needs. The school will also test for preferred learning styles i.e. Auditory (listening), Visual (seeing) and Kinaesthetic (doing). Some students may follow one of our catch up programmes at Key Stage 3 such as a synthetic phonics literacy programme to reinforce reading and spelling skills or join a small numeracy withdrawal group.

What else has Learning Support to offer?

class pic‘Check-in’ is offered to help students improve their organisational skills and to talk through any concerns they may have. There is a separate flyer available explaining this support which parents can request.

Homework club is offered to all students and is run by Mrs Horwell and Mrs Williams on a Monday and Thursday 3:10 - 4:00pm (free refreshments available).

Laptops are available, by arrangement, for any students who may experience difficulties with handwriting.

IEPs are individual education plans. They are revised for students to help them reach set targets. Staff use these to ensure that any SEN provision is in place.

Other opportunities the Learning Support Department can offer

school picThe Learning Support Department not only offers support and opportunities within Crofton but encourages students to achieve outside the school environment.

In November 2006 the Learning Support Department took a team of  students with physical disabilities to participate in a swimming gala.  The event was held in Southampton and involved many other schools.  The students enjoyed the event and found the opportunity of achieving alongside other students with similar disabilities, very rewarding.

Crofton is hoping to participate in this event annually.
